Four Tips for a More Organized home in the New Year

When decorations are put away, the cookies are gone, and the hustle and bustle of the holiday season winds down, it’s time to think about New Year’s resolutions. Every year resolutions made all over the country. Some are a success, while others are forgotten about by February. The key to making a successful resolution is to keep it simple and realistic. And if you set a goal to get organized, everything else around you will fall into place. Extra Attic Self Storage units can help you realize your goals and start the new year off on the right foot.

Go room by room.
Decluttering projects often stop before they start because homeowners become so overwhelmed. Instead of thinking in terms of tackling the whole house, break down the project room by room. This will make the job manageable and will allow you to declutter at least one room right away. Before you get started, make a list of every room in your house that needs decluttering. Then, organize them by priority level, putting your biggest stressors first. This way you’ll see immediate results when you start working, which will continue to motivate you. Organize each room by sections. List closets, dressers, shelving units, and any boxes within each room that you’ll organize individually.

Create a timeline.
Now you have a list of every room that needs to be decluttered. Create a realistic timeline for completing each project. Give yourself at least one day to complete each room. If you’re decluttering several days in a row, give yourself a day off. Focus on something else, or relax, whatever you do just avoid getting burnt out.

Set a timer.
Setting a timer is the perfect way to move things along if you are someone who tends to get distracted or overwhelmed easily. Set the timer for 10 or 15 minutes and work on one specific location from your timeline. Once you’re done, decide if you want to stay in the same spot or if you would rather move to another space in the room.

Make those hard decisions.
As you begin to sift through your items, you’ll most likely find a few things that you aren’t quite sure what to do with. In those cases, it’s time to make some hard decisions by asking yourself what is useful daily and what isn’t. When was the last time you used that smoothie maker? Are you really going to fit into those jeans from your 20’s again? Does anyone ever sit in that beanbag in the den? These questions will help you to decide whether or not something should be kept, donated, or placed in storage for another time.  Just keep in mind how nice it will be to have everything in its place, to have room to breathe in your own home, and the choices will be slightly easier to make!

Take a careful look at what items you want to keep stored and make a guess as to how much space it’s going to take to put everything in its place, either in or out of your home.  Should you opt for utilizing outside storage spaces for some of your items this year, consider Extra Attic’s facilities!
